Where the rates come from
For the 30 currencies it covers, we use the euro foreign exchange reference rates published by the European Central Bank each working day at around 16:00 CET, converted to other bases. For other currencies we use daily market rates from ExchangeRate-API. These are mid-market rates: the midpoint between buying and selling prices. The rate you actually get from a bank, card or exchange office includes a margin; enter it in "Your bank's margin" to see the difference.
Getting a better rate
Airport kiosks and hotel desks often charge 5% to 10% over the mid rate. High-street banks typically add 2% to 4% plus fees on international transfers. Cards without foreign transaction fees and specialist transfer services usually come within 0.5% to 1%. When a card terminal abroad offers to charge you in your home currency, decline: that dynamic currency conversion almost always uses a worse rate.
